Why do I need this coverage?

You have taken the steps necessary to protect yourself and those you care about most from the threat of violent criminals. You need to do everything you can to protect yourself from legal harm as well. The instant you discharge a firearm in an act of self-defense, you are exposed to the potential of criminal and/or civil prosecution. Our coverage provides the means for you to obtain the legal protection you need once the smoke clears. If you have a Concealed Weapons License and carry a firearm for protection, you absolutely need this coverage.

What does this policy cover?

Civil Defense coverage pays for your legal defense costs in the event you are sued for bodily injury or property damage caused by your use of a "legally possessed firearm" arising out of "an act of self-defense". Our program provides Civil Defense coverage of up to $500,000 based on the policy you select. Our policy also provides $50,000 in Bodily Injury and Property Damage protection regardless of which policy option you select.

Our policy provides up to $150,000 in Criminal Defense Coverage, $15,000 of which can be allocated to cover expenses you might incur during any Grand Jury or Pre-indictment investigation including court costs, attorney fees and loss wages related to your use of a "legally possessed firearm" arising out of "an act of self-defense".

What do I do if I have been involved in a shooting?

If you are involved in an act of self-defense, the first thing you will need to do is immediately report the incident to the local authorities to request help and medical assistance. Your statement to the local authorities should be brief and limited to include your name, the name of the suspect if known, names of any witnesses, the fact that you are a victim and forced to defend yourself or others. Advise the authorities that you have legal representation available and you will give a full statement in the presence of your attorney. It is advisable not to answer any additional questions until you have consulted with an attorney.

If you have legal representation available to you, your next call should be to your attorney so your rights are protected as the investigation into your case progresses. Advise your attorney to contact us immediately. If you do not have access to legal representation, contact us immediately so we can begin the claims process for you and assign legal counsel on your behalf.

What is covered under my property policy?

Our Firearm Property Policy provides the best property insurance available for your "legally possessed firearms" due to accidental physical loss caused by perils such as fire, windstorm, and hail when lawfully stored in a building or home. While other cut rate insurance companies limit the amount they will pay in the event your firearm is damaged while in the care, custody and control of others, we provide full coverage for legally possessed firearms that are damaged while being lawfully transported by aircraft and automobile. You can pay less for an insurance policy but no company provides more protection for your valuable firearms than Conifer.

Does my homeowner policy cover acts of self-defense?

In many cases the answer is no. Most homeowner's policies contain intentional injury exclusions. These intentional act exclusions typically define "self-defense" as an intentional act. Under these exclusions, acts of self-defense are excluded from coverage.

If an individual is accidentally injured on your property, your homeowner's liability coverage will likely cover the medical expenses and resulting legal fees that are incurred in your civil defense. However, if you discharge a firearm at an intruder and you end up in criminal or civil court, the deliberate nature of the act (even in self-defense) means that your homeowners insurance policy likely will not cover the event and resulting costs that are sure to follow.

How is this program different from other liability programs?

Unlike many programs that limit coverage to activities such as hunting or shooting ranges, our program provides coverage to you for your use of a "legally possessed firearm" arising out of "an act of self-defense" regardless of your activities immediately preceding the event anywhere you can legally possess a firearm in the United States including its territories and possessions, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
